The evening
Golf by day, casino nights: how a Hyde Mountain stay and play trip fills its evenings
The round finishes by mid-afternoon in September and the patio winds down not long after, which leaves a short list — one gaming floor half an hour west, two more an hour or so south, and whatever is on the phone.

What is left of the evening in Sicamous
Sicamous is a small town built on the channel where Mara Lake and Shuswap Lake meet, and its evening economy is sized accordingly. Through July and August the marina, the beaches and the restaurants along the highway carry the night between them. In late September, when the golf is at its best and the course is at its quietest, the pattern is different: the last groups come off the eighteenth around five, the clubhouse winds down, and by nine the town has gone still.
That leaves three realistic ways to spend the rest of it, and most groups use all three across a long weekend. Drive to a gaming floor. Stay in with whatever the motel television offers. Or play from the room, which in practice means a phone, a laptop and half an hour spent reading through the best online casinos in Canada before anyone commits to a tee time in the morning.
None of the three is a substitute for the round, and that is the point. A golf trip to this valley is built around the water and the hillside, not around the nightlife, so the evening is a question of what fills two or three hours rather than what anchors the day.
Chances Salmon Arm, thirty minutes west
The nearest gaming floor to the course is Chances Salmon Arm, half an hour west along the Trans-Canada. It opened in July 2015 on Adams Lake Indian Band land and it remains the only venue of its kind in the Shuswap: a nine-thousand-square-foot floor carrying 99 slot machines and one electronic blackjack terminal, plus bingo run both ways, with 124 electronic seats and 24 paper ones.
The opening hours are the detail that matters on a golf trip. The floor runs from eleven in the morning to eleven at night Sunday through Thursday, and to midnight on Friday and Saturday. A round finishing at five, dinner in town and the drive west still leaves a couple of hours on any night of the week. There is a kitchen on site if dinner is easier done there than in Sicamous, entry is nineteen and over with identification, and the venue asks for reasonable dress.
If the plan is to eat first, the clubhouse patio and the places to eat in town are covered separately. The drive itself is thirty minutes of highway and unlit for most of it, which is worth knowing before a group decides who is driving.
Further out: Vernon and Kamloops
Past Salmon Arm the region’s casinos are full-scale rather than community-sized. Vernon sits roughly 75 kilometres south and has Gateway’s Lake City Casino; Kamloops is about 140 kilometres west and has Cascades Casino, which carries live table games and poker alongside several hundred machines. Both are an hour or more each way.
That puts them outside what most people will take on after eighteen holes and well inside what a rain day can absorb. Revelstoke, an hour east, has no casino at all, and neither does Sicamous. The course sits in the middle of a triangle whose corners are all at least half an hour away, which is the whole reason the evening question comes up in the first place.
Playing from the room, and what the rules are here
Gambling in British Columbia is provincially controlled. The provincial framework places every legal lottery, casino and online product under the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, which operates the only site licensed to take bets from inside the province. Everything else a visitor can reach from a motel room in Sicamous is licensed somewhere other than here and carries no provincial protection — which is why published comparisons of online casinos in Canada are worth reading properly rather than skimming.
The practical points are the dull ones. Nineteen is the minimum age across the province, on a floor or on a screen. Cellular coverage is good along the highway corridor and patchy out on the water, so an evening on a moored houseboat is not a reliable place to plan on a connection. And the motels and lakeside resorts in town mostly run their own wifi rather than a managed service, which is fine for reading and less good for anything that has to stay up for an hour.
Building it into the trip
The version of this that works is the unhurried one. Play in the morning, eat in the afternoon, and treat the evening as optional rather than scheduled. A Friday round with a drive to Salmon Arm bolted onto the end of it is a long day at the end of a long drive in; Saturday, when the floor is open to midnight, is the better night to give up to it.
For a group that wants different things, the geography helps more than it looks like it should. Sicamous keeps the people who want the lake and an early start; Salmon Arm takes the ones who want a floor and a late finish; and because the two are thirty minutes apart, nobody has to change accommodation to get either.
Questions about evenings here
Is there a casino in Sicamous?
No. The nearest gaming floor is Chances Salmon Arm, half an hour west along the Trans-Canada. Sicamous itself has restaurants, a marina and the lake, and nothing licensed for gaming.
How late is the nearest gaming floor open?
Eleven in the morning to eleven at night from Sunday to Thursday, and to midnight on Friday and Saturday. A round finishing mid-afternoon leaves time for dinner and the drive on any night of the week.
What is the minimum age?
Nineteen, throughout British Columbia, and identification is checked at the door. The same age applies to the province’s own licensed online site.
Are online casinos legal in British Columbia?
The province licenses one site of its own through the British Columbia Lottery Corporation. Offshore operators are not licensed here and fall outside provincial dispute and payout rules, which is the distinction worth understanding before picking from any published list of online casinos in Canada.
Is it worth driving to Vernon or Kamloops?
On a golf night, rarely — both are an hour or more each way. On a rain day, yes: Cascades Casino in Kamloops has live tables and poker, which nothing in the Shuswap does.
